M is going on two and learning new words at an astonishing pace. We were listening to Queens of the Stone Age this morning, and I started to wonder if I was going to have to give up popular music for the next half dozen years until he can understand when it’s an appropriate situation for swearing.

Going through my musical catalog, I almost can’t think of a modern album, certainly not a rock album, that doesn’t have some swearing in its lyrics. The young dad part of me says that I don’t really care too much about him swearing; he’s going to learn it somewhere, and we can have a discussion about when swearing is appropriate and when it’s not. But there’s another part of me that knows little kids brains are not like adult brains, and it’s going to be a while before the concepts of tact, polite behavior and situational awareness make any sense at all, and until that time, do I really want a four year old who says fuck?
